How does a cordless electric kettle work?

Cars run on gas and people run on tea and coffee ( at least in my house ). Electric kettles are very commonly used to boil water for tea and cooking. An electric kettle is a household electrical appliance that is most frequently used. Just fill it with water, plug it in and in a couple of minutes, you have piping hot water ready to use. 

Americans mostly prefer to use stove-top kettles. Stove-top kettles are filled with water and then heated on a gas or electric stove. When water starts boiling, the steam floors out of the kettle spout producing a whistle. It signals the user that the water is ready to use and you should turn off the stove. 

Electric kettles have become more popular in America during the past two decades for multiple reasons such as tea is becoming a more popular beverage due to its health benefits and the best electric kettles use less energy and boil water quietly and quickly. Moreover, boiling water in an electric kettle is much more convenient as it’s easy to pour the water out of the kettle. 

Corded Electric Kettles

When electric kettles were introduced in the market. They used to come with a cord attached to the side or top of the water reservoir. 

The metal coil heating element of the unit is located inside the water reservoir. When the kettle is turned on, the heating element heats up and ultimately leads to boiling the water. 

One of the major problems faced while using a corded kettle is that they’re not convenient to use if you have a small kitchen to maneuver in. 

It was difficult to pour hot water out of the bulk kettle attached to the wall by a short cord. 

Moreover, it wasn’t possible to heat just a single cup of water. You had to fill the kettle with enough water to completely cover the heating element. Otherwise, it could overheat and burn out. 

That was another reason why people did not prefer to use a corded electric kettle and prefer boiling water on the stovetop. 

The stove-top kettles definitely took a bit longer to boil the water but they were convenient to use and you could walk away freely. 

This problem was eliminated when cordless electric kettles were introduced in the market. 

Cordless Electric Kettle

As said earlier, a cordless electric kettle overcomes the demerits of the corded kettle. That made more and more people use it for conveniently boiling the water. 

The water reservoir of the cordless kettles sits atop a base with a knob in the center. The base of the unit is attached to a cord that plugs into an outlet.

When the kettle is placed on the base unit, it completes an electrical circuit that gives power to the heating element. 

The electrical current in the heating coil and the resistance of the element’s material turn the electrical energy into heat. As the coil is in contact with the water, it heats it up. 

Some electric kettles come with a metal plate at the bottom below which the heating coil is housed. This is a cleaner design, but the principle remains the same.

Moreover, some kettles also come with a built-in thermostat that shows your temperature so you know when to switch off the kettle.
